About The University Writing Center
The University Writing Center is a free service to UCF students available in 3 locations.
The UWC is designed to help foster a community of scholarship and shared leadership at UCF through peer consultation. Peer consultation is a one-on-one method between students that share common intellectual and academic development with the goal to improve their writing. Students become better writers when they engage in this highly effective process that cannot be mimicked in the classroom. Through peer consultation, students learn by teaching each other.
UWC student clients can expect to receive help overcoming writer's block; developing critical thinking skills; understanding the material to be written; planning, organizing, revising, and editing papers; designing oral presentations; and analyzing the rhetorical demands of a writing task. Students create a committed and caring writer's community in the UWC which helps them achieve excellence in their writing both in and out of class.
Students can make appointments, view and use resources, download helpful handouts, learn about UWC staff, and stay up-to-date on the UCF UWC News. Before planning a visit, students should read UWC policies.
Using the Writing Center
The UWC is a peer-consultation resource for UCF students. There are several types of consultations and the first step is to determine which type is right for you; face-to-face, phone, or online chat. It is important to remember that these meetings can take place at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to final editing. Once a type of consultation has been decided on, the next step is to make an appointment. Students may schedule appointments through TutorTrac or by phone.
Once an appointment has been made, students participate in an individualized 30-minute or 60-minute meeting with a trained writing consultant(Small group appointments are also available). Writers can also work with other materials such as handouts on various facets of the writing process, CLAST preparation materials, and computers.
Students can make an appointment or drop in any time we're open. They should bring details about the assignment along with notes and any drafts. Global issues (purpose, thesis, organization, support, etc.) will be addressed first during a consultation.
The UWC also holds workshops on special writing topics and assists faculty with assigning and evaluating writing.
