Consultations

student reading on benchThe UWC offers both face-to-face consultations in Orlando, Cocoa, and Daytona Beach, and real-time online consultations via Adobe Connect. All Orlando, Cocoa, and Online consultations can be scheduled by accessing TutorTrac online. For Daytona consultations, please visit the Daytona State College Writing Center website.

Making Appointments

TutorTrac is the writing center's suggested method of making an appointment. Students should make sure to schedule an appointment for the writing center in the right location. By changing the "Center" option in TutorTrac, students can search for available appointments:

  • Cocoa (face-to-face in the BCC-UCF Writing Center on the Cocoa campus)
  • Orlando Main Center (face-to-face in Mod 8-608 in Orlando)
  • Library (face-to-face in the Orlando library, Information Commons)
  • Rosen (face-to-face in the Rosen campus library)
  • Online (screenshare sessions, by appointment only)

You may call the UWC in Orlando, Cocoa, or Daytona Beach if you are unable to schedule your appointment online.

Before making an appointment, students should read the University Writing Center policies below.

UWC Policies

NOTE: UWC consultants can help you learn how to proofread your own work so that you can grow as a writer. The UWC does not write, grade, or proofread papers for you. Any changes are made with you and at your discretion.

  • Make an appointment to avoid waiting

The UWC is typically booked with appointments two or three days in advance. During peak periods, such as the weeks leading up to final exams, the UWC may be fully booked as early as a week or two ahead of time. Students should make an appointment as far in advance as possible. Although the UWC accepts walk-ins, we strongly recommend that students make an appointment. Walk-ins might be seen in a matter of minutes or it may take an hour or more.

If a student is more than five minutes late for an appointment, he or she will lose the scheduled appointment. The appointment time will be given to a student who has been waiting as a walk-in so that we may help as many writers as possible. When a student arrives after the five-minute window, the student will have to sign up as a walk-in and wait for the next available consultant.

  • Appointment Times

Most UWC appointments last 45 minutes. Walk-in consultations last approximately 25 minutes. These times will allow for a good discussion of a 5- to 7-page paper. If you have a longer paper, you may want to schedule an additional appointment on another day.

Students can visit once a day, up to three times per week. If you have special circumstances and feel you need more time, please contact the desired location: Orlando, Cocoa, or Daytona Beach.

  • With few exceptions, only UCF and BCC students can make appointments

Non-UCF students can be seen as walk-ins on a space-available basis but should allow extra time so that we can register them in the computer system. This extra time for registration also applies to BCC students at their first visit unless a UWC representative pre-registers them by phone.

Non-students are limited to a total of five appointments.

  • Consultations must be with the writer

The UWC cannot consult with a substitute for the actual writer, for two reasons:

    1. The UWC may have questions about the writer's decisions that can't be answered by a substitute.
    2. The UWC has a teaching role — suggestions, advice, and feedback are less useful without the writer present.
  • The UWC provides accommodations for disabilities

The University of Central Florida provides reasonable accommodation for those with mental or physical disabilities upon request. In addition, the main Orlando center in Mod 8-608 offers a computer station equipped with JAWS screen reading software and Dragon Naturally Speaking speech-to-text software, which students can use with or without a consultant. Advance notice at the decision to attend the University Writing Center is encouraged in order to best meet the needs of attendees. Contact the desired location: Orlando, Cocoa, or Daytona Beach.
